The store

A full-service family grocery store

Irricana Family Foods is a proper grocery store, not a convenience stop. Six fresh departments run around the outside of the building and six numbered aisles fill the middle, which between them cover a full week of shopping — the roast and the potatoes to go with it, the cereal, the laundry soap and the dog food on the way out.

What a full-service store actually means

It means you don't have to make a second trip. Meat is cut and wrapped on site rather than arriving pre-packed, produce is worked through the week rather than stocked once, and the bakery ovens are behind the counter, not in another town.

It also means the boring half of the list is covered. Bathroom tissue, laundry detergent, dish soap, garbage bags, light bulbs, batteries, diapers, cat litter — all of it is here, so the grocery run doesn't turn into three errands.

How the store is laid out

Produce is the first thing inside the doors. The Meat wall and the Deli case run along the back, Dairy and the frozen food doors take the far side, and the Bakery counter sits off to one side with the hot drinks machine next to it.

The six aisles in the middle are numbered and signed at both ends. If you'd rather know before you go, the full aisle directory lists what's on every sign in the store.

Also in the building

  • An ATM just inside the front doors
  • U-Haul truck and trailer rentals
  • A carpet cleaner available to rent by the day
  • Karak chai, coffee and hot chocolate by the bakery counter

Stock varies week to week. This is what the store reliably carries, not a live inventory.

Questions

A Full-Service Family Grocery Store — your questions

Is Irricana Family Foods a full grocery store or a convenience store?

A full grocery store. It has six staffed fresh departments — Produce, Meat, Deli, Dairy, Bakery and Frozen Food — plus six aisles of packaged groceries, cleaning supplies, health and baby products and pet food.

Can I do a whole week's shopping there?

That's what it's set up for. Fresh, frozen, pantry, household and pet are all under one roof, which is the point of a full-service independent store.

What makes it different from a large supermarket chain?

Scale, mostly. The staff cut the meat, face the shelves and answer the phone, so if you want to know whether something is in today, you can ring the store and someone will physically go and look.

Who runs the store?

Ravindra Patel is the owner. For anything the front counter can't answer, call (403) 935-5555 or use the contact form.
